The LM7805 is a 3-terminal fixed positive voltage regulator providing 5 V output at up to 500 mA current. It operates from 7 V to 25 V input and features internal thermal overload protection, short-circuit current limiting, and safe-area compensation. The device requires only two external capacitors (0.33 µF input, 0.1 µF output) for stability, though additional capacitance improves transient response. Output voltage tolerance is ±4% over temperature range. Packaged in SOT-223 (MP) for surface-mount applications, the LM7805 is the industry standard for local 5 V regulation in medium-current applications.
