The MAX232 is a dual RS-232 line driver/receiver operating from a single 5V supply with a charge pump requiring only four 0.1µF external capacitors. It features two drivers and two receivers meeting TIA/EIA-232-F standards, supporting data rates up to 120kbps. The device provides ±15kV ESD protection on RS-232 pins. Supply current is 10mA typical. The MAX232 is packaged in 16-pin PDIP for through-hole mounting. Selection is standard for 5V serial communication requiring RS-232 interface without a ±12V supply. Applications include battery-powered electronics, handheld instruments, point-of-sale terminals, computer serial ports, and microcontroller UART-to-RS-232 conversion in legacy and prototyping systems.
