The MAX3221E is a single RS-232 line driver/receiver operating from a single 3 V to 5.5 V supply with a charge pump requiring only four 0.1 µF external capacitors. It features one driver and one receiver, supporting data rates up to 250 kbps, with ±15 kV ESD protection on RS-232 pins. Auto-powerdown reduces supply current to 1 µA when the RS-232 cable is disconnected or the driver is inactive. Selection is ideal for battery-powered portable RS-232 applications with space constraints. Applications include PDAs, handheld instruments, GPS receivers, and portable diagnostic equipment requiring single-channel serial communication with low power consumption.
