The MAX3221 is a single-channel RS-232 line driver/receiver operating from a 3-V to 5.5-V single supply . It features one driver and one receiver, supporting data rates up to 250 kbps. The device includes a charge pump requiring only four 0.1-μF external capacitors, eliminating the need for a ±12-V supply. It provides ±15-kV ESD protection on RS-232 pins and includes an automatic power-down feature that reduces supply current to 1 μA when no valid RS-232 signal is present. The device remains active in normal operation with 1-mA typical supply current. Packaged in a 16-pin SSOP (DB) (6.2 mm × 5.3 mm), the MAX3221 is ideal for battery-powered electronics, handheld instruments, PDAs, and point-of-sale terminals.
