The MAX3232 is a dual RS-232 line driver/receiver operating from a single 3-V to 5.5-V supply, with a charge pump requiring only four 0.1-µF external capacitors. It features two drivers and two receivers meeting TIA/EIA-232-F standards, supporting data rates up to 250 kbps. The device provides ±15-kV ESD protection on RS-232 pins and consumes a low 0.3-mA typical supply current. Operating temperature range is –40 °C to 85 °C. Packaged in a 16-pin SOIC, it is standard for industrial serial communication. Applications include battery-powered electronics, handheld instruments, point-of-sale terminals, industrial PDAs, and computer serial ports requiring an RS-232 interface without a ±12-V supply.
