The ST232BDR from ST is a 5 V powered 2‑driver/2‑receiver RS‑232 transceiver that follows EIA/TIA‑232 and V.28 standards. For selection, its single 4.5–5.5 V supply, 220 kbps data rate, 500 mV receiver hysteresis, and ±30 V receiver input range allow full‑duplex serial links with only four 0.1 µF external capacitors, while 5 mA no‑load current and a ‑40 °C to +85 °C range suit space‑ and power‑constrained designs needing controlled slew rate and compatibility with MAX232/MAX202 footprints. In application, it connects microcontrollers, embedded processors, and legacy peripherals in portable computers, battery‑powered RS‑232 systems, low‑power modems, multi‑drop networks, industrial automation, point‑of‑sale terminals, and instrumentation where true RS‑232 levels are required but ±12 V rails are not available.
